The Embryo Donation Process for Intended Parents

Many Intended Parents who we work with are eager to get started right away. We’ve made the process as simple and straightforward as possible:
1.
Consultation with a Physician
Your journey begins with a consultation with a physician of your choosing. During this visit, we’ll take the time to understand your medical history, listen to your hopes and goals, and discuss whether using donor embryos is the right step for you.
2.
Consents + Testing
To move forward with donor embryos, you’ll complete key steps with your care team. These include a psychoeducational consultation, genetic match consultation, legal clearance, and a financial review. For those transferring embryos themselves (not using a gestational carrier), additional steps include preconception labs, a saline sonogram or HyCoSy, and routine screenings like a Pap smear and mammogram. All required consents (e.g., donor use, embryo transfer, tissue transport) must be signed within the past year. Once these requirements and treatment verification are complete, you’ll be ready to proceed with your embryo selection.
3.
Cycle Coordination + Embryo Selection
Once you’re cleared to move forward, you’ll work closely with a dedicated patient navigator from Nest Donor Bank to choose the donor embryos that feel right for you. Whether you’re selecting from Nest Cryo Bank or an outside donor bank, we’ll support you every step of the way. Along the way, we’ll guide you through completing some forms, screenings, and consents. If you’re using embryos from outside Spring, we’ll collect additional details about the embryos from the transferring clinic or bank to ensure everything is in place.
4.
Embryo Transport
Once everything is in order and we’ve confirmed eligibility, if your embryos are stored at a different location, we’ll begin the process of safely coordinating the transport to your preferred Spring location.
5.
Preparing for Embryo Transfer
As you prepare for the next step, we’ll support you with a treatment cycle designed to prepare your body for the embryo transfer. This may include hormone therapy and careful monitoring to help optimize your chances of success. If you’re working with a gestational carrier, your patient coordinator will collaborate with them to ensure everything is set for the transfer.
6.
Embryo Transfer
The embryo transfer is a quick and minimally invasive procedure, and you’ll be in great hands with our team. After the transfer, we’ll provide you with clear instructions on post-care and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and support you throughout the journey.

How are potential embryos selected?

Embryo selection is based on both genetic testing and grading to ensure the highest chance of a successful pregnancy. We only accept embryos that have undergone genetic testing and meet our strict grading criteria of AA, AB, or BA. Additionally, the donor must have at least two or more embryos available to be considered. This careful selection process helps provide intended parents with the best possible outcomes.

Will we be in contact with the donor family?

The choice is entirely yours. We offer three thoughtful donation models: closed (no direct communication), semi-open (mediated annual updates), and open (direct communication). Each pathway respects your comfort level while prioritizing the potential child’s future understanding of their unique origin story.

What medical and psychological support is provided?

We provide comprehensive medical and psychological support throughout the embryo donation process. Egg and sperm source embryo donors undergo psychological evaluation and genetic counseling to ensure they fully understand the implications of donation. A joint psychological consultation is then conducted with both the embryo donor(s) and the intended recipient to facilitate informed decision-making. Additionally, the embryo recipient has a separate genetic match consultation with our genetic counselor to review compatibility and any potential genetic considerations. This thorough support system helps ensure the well-being of all parties involved.
